Divert on no answer: the codes, carrier by carrier

"Divert on no answer" means your phone rings at the desk as normal, and only a call nobody has picked up goes to Giday. One code switches it on, one switches it off, and on most lines you can choose how long it rings first. Here's how — with the honest caveat that these are your phone company's settings, so if a code doesn't take, their support line can set it in a minute.

The three kinds of divert

  • All calls. Everything goes to Giday. Use this when the desk is empty: after hours, weekends, a sick day.
  • No answer. Rings at the desk first; diverts if nobody picks up in time. The backup setting.
  • Busy. Diverts only when the line is already on a call. Worth setting alongside no-answer so a second caller isn't engaged-toned.

Your Giday number is in your welcome email and on your dashboard. In the codes below, replace NUMBER with it, in the 04 or 02 form rather than +61.

Mobiles: Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and the resellers on their networks

These are the standard GSM codes and work on every Australian mobile network. Dial them like a phone number and press call.

WhatDial, then press call
Divert on no answer — on**61*NUMBER#
Divert on no answer — off##61#
Check it*#61#
Divert when busy — on**67*NUMBER#
Divert when busy — off##67#
Divert all calls — on**21*NUMBER#
Divert all calls — off##21#

Ring time before it diverts. The default is around 15 seconds, three or four rings. Carriers let you set 5 to 30 seconds in 5-second steps. On Telstra, dial **61*NUMBER**20# for 20 seconds (we've dialled it on a Telstra mobile and it's accepted; swap 20 for 15, 25 or 30). On Optus and Vodafone the same code is worth trying first; if your phone rejects it, the plain **61*NUMBER# still works at the default ring time, and the support line (Optus 133 937, Vodafone 1300 650 410) can set the longer time.

Landlines on the Telstra network, and most NBN voice services

Lift the handset, wait for the dial tone, then:

WhatDial
Divert on no answer — on*61 then NUMBER then #
Divert on no answer — off#61#
Divert when busy — on*67 then NUMBER then #
Divert when busy — off#67#
Divert all calls — on*21 then NUMBER then #
Divert all calls — off#21#

Ring time: on the Telstra network, resellers describe setting the no-answer delay by dialling *61, the NUMBER, then *, the seconds (5 to 60), then #; the default is about 20 seconds. If that doesn't take on your line, Telstra on 13 22 00 can set it. The on and off codes above are from Telstra's own support page.

NBN phones from other providers, and VoIP

If your phone comes through an NBN modem or a VoIP service — Optus NBN voice, TPG, Aussie Broadband, a hosted PBX — call forwarding is usually set in the provider's app or web portal rather than by dialling a code, and the ring time is a setting on the same screen. Search the provider's help for "call forwarding no answer". If you're on a hosted phone system with a reception console, ask whoever installed it to set "forward on no answer" to your Giday number — it's a two-minute change.

The sick-day switch

When the desk is empty, swap no-answer for divert-all for the day: **21*NUMBER# on a mobile, *21 NUMBER # on a landline. Undo it with ##21# or #21# when you're back. Giday answers everything in between, in your name, with your hours and your diary, and nobody has to learn anything.

Check it worked

Ring your own number from another phone and don't answer. After the ring time, Verity should pick up with your greeting. If she answers immediately, you've set divert-all; if the call rings out to voicemail, the divert didn't take — try the code once more, then ring your carrier.

Straight answers

Does diverting cost anything?
Most Australian mobile plans include call diversion, and a diverted call to an Australian number is usually charged as an outgoing call under your plan's included calls. Check your plan.
Can I divert only after hours?
Yes — set divert-all when you close and undo it when you open, or ask your carrier about a timed divert. Giday answers around the clock, so many businesses leave no-answer divert on permanently and use divert-all only when the desk is empty.
Will callers notice?
They hear ringing, then Verity. There's no announcement of the divert itself.
Does this change my number?
No. Callers ring the number they've always rung; the divert happens at the exchange.
